Cindy's Northern Gifts offers classes for all skill levels, from the beginner through the experienced knitter looking for a new challenge.   Check below for a complete listing, with times, instructors, pre-requisites (if necessary), and materials.  Don’t see what you are interested in?  Call or drop us an email, and we will see what we can do.  We do ask that you support the shop by purchasing your materials here as a courtesy to Cindy.  That allows her to continue to offer you a variety of classes. 

Class fees and policies:

  • Payment of class fee to instructors is required.
  • Please note that class fees are Non-Refundable.
  • To ensure that you receive the most value out of each class session, required homework must be completed as assigned.
  • Our class prices are based on the student purchasing yarn at our store. 

IN STORE PRIVATE LESSONS: 

Private lessons are available for crochet or knitting. These run $10 for each 1 hour session. Call us and we will have an instructor contact you to set up a time that is convenient for you at the store. This is a great way to get the information and assistance that you need.

Learn with Hedgehog Cynthia— September & October 2017
 
Cynthia is available for private lessons in knit and crochet. She teaches both Continental/German style knitting and American/English style knitting. Contact her about private lessons by calling the store. Payment for all classes/lessons is made directly to the instructor by check or cash, payable at the first session.
For classes please sign up by contacting the store (439-9221). Classes with fewer than 3 students will generally be canceled, but you can reschedule for private lessons on the topic.
Basic tool kit for classes: removable stitch markers, scissors, tapestry or Chibi needle, notebook & pencil, tape measure or ruler, small crochet hook.
Please remember that Cindy’s Northern Crafts can only stay in business if you support the store. Please purchase yarns and supplies for classes there.
 
Help Doctor–drop in HELP! for knitting and crochet
(You do not need to sign up for this class. It is ongoing on Thursdays.)
You bring in your project for help, encouragement, analysis, fun. You’ll get your questions answered and learn the answer to all the other participants’ questions that come up. Techniques covered will add to your knitting/crocheting skills as you spend time with other fiber enthusiasts.
Skills needed: knowledge of basic knitting (k & p) or crochet (ch, sc, dc) stitches
Supplies: pattern, yarn for project, several choices of hooks or needles near the one called for in your pattern, basic tools as listed at top
Most Thursdays, 1:00–3:00; there is no fee for this class for the rest of the year 2017. I’m asking that you make a donation to help fund the NWMI Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build in Alanson.
 
Learn to Crochet
Learn basic stitches worked back and forth. Pattern reading: what do all those letters/numbers mean? Learn the “unwritten rules/assumptions” that guide crocheting. Anatomy of a stitch and how to find the “next stitch.”
Skills needed: assumes no previous experience or long ago “I did a little.” But if you want to brush up, you are welcome also.
Supplies: worsted weight yarn with a tight twist, H hook, basic tool kit as listed above.
2 session class with homework; Thursdays, Sept. 14 & 21, 10:30–noon; $20
 
Easy Fingerless Gloves
This is a basic project for those just starting out in the knitting world. You know how to knit & purl going back and forth, but you’re wondering about reading patterns and charts; how to make your edges look good; controlling cast on and bind off. We’ll also learn a few other techniques as we create a pair of fingerless gloves with some nice surface texture.
Skills needed: comfortable with knit & purl stitch, some knowledge of long-tail cast on.
Supplies: worsted weight yarn in a color you really like, #8 straight or circular needles, basic tool kit as listed above.
3 session class with homework: Thursdays, Sept. 28, Oct. 5, 12; 10:30–noon; $30
 
Crofthoose Hat
 
 
You’ll be knitting the Crofthoose hat (a pattern from a pervious year’s Shetland Wool Week). This is Fair Isle color work in the round. Learn a two color cast on; about choosing effective colors; reading charts with a decreasing number of stitches. Pattern will be supplied.
Skills needed: comfortable working in the round on double points or 2 circular needles.
Supplies: sport wt yarn in 5 contrasting colors. One of the colors will be your main background color, the secondary colors should contrast with the main color and should have good contrast with at least one of the other secondary colors. 125 yd of the main color, less than 100 yd of each contrast color. #2 and #4 double points or 2 circulars. Basic tool kit as listed above.
4 session class with homework: Thursdays, Oct. 19, 26, Nov 2, 9; 10:30-noon; $40
   
Build your own class 
Pick a technique or project and some friends who want to join you in a learning adventure. I will tailor the class(es) to your interests and schedule. We can gather at the store or in someone’s home. Endless possibilities! For example a learn to knit or crochet gathering. Your group will most likely need two or three 2-hour sessions to learn and be comfortable with the basics of either knitting or crochet.

Refunds:   Payment is required when registering for class.  Refund will be given if instructor cancels class or cancelation notification is given one week prior to scheduled class.  Otherwise, no refunds are given for classes signed up for.
